untranslations
This is a short notice to myself about all of the things I have written and then lost or destroyed over the years. I hope the next time I go into one of my sinking rages that I will read this, and wait, but I know that won’t actually happen, and I’ll have to write this notice over agian.
- Other Places (1987): this was a sci-fi story I wrote in middle school which was the start of my “take actual events and make them seem weirder” strategy. This all ended up on a Commodore 64 floppy which is now lost, and was probably sold during a garage sale.
- Angel of Mercy (1990-1993): this is a zine I wrote when I was all hopped up on the excitement of writing, the last year of high school and the first year and a half of college. I still have copies of issue one and three, and some of issue four, and the rest I threw away during a move.
- Psychic Theater (1990-1993): more of the same, only this was microstories, poems, fictionalized recreations of real life and drug-addled gibberish I sent to ***** when I was trying (unsuccessfully) to woo her. A little of this she lost during a move, and the rest ended up in the *******’s attic until I got it back in the fall of ‘95, and due to stupid personal bullshit I threw almost all of this stuff out in early November of that year.
- Bone Spreader (1992): this was my first try at writing a longer story, which ended up being about thirty pages, and was about a magician who could only perform his amazing tricks by killing his assistants. I gave a copy to some girl from my dorm and I never saw it again.
- Killing The Corpse (1994): this was the first thing I wrote after my freakout. Very morbid and creepy and I burned it after I had nightmares that people would read it after I died.
- Doubling (1994): By this time I was starting to get back on track, and wrote this as another wooery attempt. Lost during the time I was at UNI in ‘95.
- Rerise (1995-1998): The Stupid Book, as I liked to call it. Endless annoyance. Deleted most of it after too many times telling everyone I was almost finished.
- Wear Your Love Like Snowpants (1995-1996): The Fast Eddie Satan novella (if you can call sixty pages a novella). Lost when I moved out of the co-op in a panic, one step ahead of the law.
- The Richter-Goldberg Talent Show (1997-2003): My first attempt to write specifically for the internet, lots of crosslinked goofery and automatic writing and spookiness. Mostly lost in a drive failure, but a few pieces remain.
- Hum Goddess (1999): another of my ill-conceived and vaguely creepy plans to trick some girl into liking me by writing her stories. Missing presumed lost.
- Evasions (2000-2003): twelve photographs by Kia with twelve stories by me. Lost in drive failure, though I still have the pictures, and might attempt a second version.
- The Cult of the Yellow Sign (2000-2001): page-sized flyers with weird photocopied junk and microstories I made while in Austin, tacking and taping anywhere I could find a flat surface. I thought I kept copies of all this stuff, but apparently I didn’t.
- Lazaretto (2003): a revision of the Abandoned Hospital Ship stuff. Lost in drive failure.
- Garbage Sack Fetus Blues (2002-2003): the Mark and Escho stories. Handwritten in a spiral which I have since lost.
- Partials (2004): an attempt at what Heath calls autology. Deleted.
And any number of little pieces, notes, letter-stories, narrated audiotapes and other crap. It’s amazing I have anything to show for what I’ve done.
